1000s BCE
The Totonac people of Mexico were the first to cultivate vanilla. They believed vanilla was a gift from the gods and used it in religious ceremonies.
1400s
The Aztecs conquered the Totonacs and adopted vanilla, using it to flavour their chocolate drink called xocolātl, reserved for nobility.
1520
